Stress

"The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another."

(William James)

What is Stress?

"You can do anything but not everything"
(David Allen)

Stress is your body's natural response to pressure or challenges; it's how you react when you feel overwhelmed, threatened or under strain physically or emotionally.

Not All Stress is Bad...

A little stress can help you stay alert and focussed, helpful if you've got a job interview or an exam!

Too much stress can make you feel anxious, tired or upset and may impact negatively on your performance of even basic tasks.

How Counselling Helps

There are many practical things which you can do to manage everyday stress such as exercising regularly, getting out in nature, eating healthily and talking to friends and family.  These are everyday strategies we can put into place.

When stress tips into something which feels more overwhelming, our go to strategies are often the first thing which we let go, we may work more, stop exercising, eat unhealthy food and cancel plans with friends as things become too overwhelming and as a result we may need additional support.

As your counsellor I provide a safe space for you to talk about what's bothering you.  Key to my approach is working with the root cause of why certain things might stress you out, often linked to past relationships or experiences.  We will explore the feelings which may be buried or hard to express and support you in learning to spot and change unhelpful habits and reactions so that you can feel more in control and recognise your own personal signs of when you're tipping into overwhelm.
